For the seventh time in succession, the readers of specialist magazine “Off Road” have chosen the Mercedes-Benz Unimog as the best off-road vehicle of the year in the category “Special Vehicles”. The title “Off-Roader of the Year 2011 – Category Special Vehicles” was awarded by the traditional Munich 4WD magazine based on the results of a Reader’s Choice questionnaire covering eight categories of off-road vehicles.
The off-road obelisk was presented in a festive atmosphere at a formal evening in Munich’s theatre tent “Das Schloss”. Over 53,000 votes were sent in by the deadline on 18 January 2011 and there were 101 vehicles to choose from. The Unimog came first In the category for special vehicles with an outstanding 47.6 % of the readers’ votes.
Other categories were “Off-road Cars”, “Luxury Off-road Cars”, “Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV)”, “Luxury SUV”, “Classics”, “Pick-ups”, “Special Vehicles” and “Crossover”. Among the special vehicles – off-road vehicles suitable for transporting heavy loads and equipment to remote districts or as a base vehicle for special bodies and superstructures for fire services, expeditions or military purposes – the Unimog was quite clearly one step ahead. It received high praise for its characteristic product features including its outstanding off-road mobility concept with portal axles and immense torsional flexibility combined with its extremely sturdy and tough construction.
Where it gets through, others don’t even manage to arrive
The Unimog product range U 4000 to U 5000 with its outstanding off-road mobility has been produced in Wörth since autumn 2002 and is predestined for difficult off-road operations miles away from sealed roads and tracks. Its main areas of operation are as a fire service vehicle – in particular for fighting forest fires, as well as for disaster relief, expeditions as well as service and maintenance work in remote, virtually inaccessible areas – with the motto “Where the Unimog gets through, others don’t even manage to arrive”.
The Unimog models U 4000 and U 5000 are the ideal complement to the vehicles in the U 300 to U 500 product range which are mainly used as workhorses for public service departments, municipal contractors, in the construction and energy sectors as well as for in-company transport and road-rail operations. The youngest member of the Unimog family is the compact Unimog U 20 which was only launched in 2008.
The legendary G-Class also landed right at the top of the readers’ favourites: it triumphed in the category “Luxury Off-Road Cars”. The G-Class “Professional” won the category “Classics”.
The Off-Road Magazine has been holding the Readers’ Choice for the off-road vehicles of the year since 1982.
60 Years of the Mercedes-Benz Unimog – the success of an idea:
The very first Mercedes-Benz Unimog rolled off the assembly line in Gaggenau just 60 years’ ago – on 3 June 1951. A unique vehicle concept had been created with extreme off-road mobility due to its four-wheel drive combined with high speeds on roads. The Daimler AG is celebrating this jubilee in 2011 with various events.
